MSNBC praises LDS Church's networking skills, humanitarian efforts
In Japan, the Mormon network gathers the flock
The only thing that rivals the Mormon church’s ability to spread the word is its ability to cope with emergencies.
Within 36 hours of the earthquake striking off the coast of Sendai on March 11, the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced that all 638 of its missionaries in the country — 342 Americans, 216 Japanese and 80 from other nations – were safe.
Within a few days, the church also had accounted for all but about 1,000 of its 125,000 members in Japan.
“Whether it is Haiti or Japan,” said David Evans, a senior leader in the church who serves in the missionary department. “This is how it works everywhere.”
Chalk it up to a culture of discipline and emergency preparedness. The church has a detailed hierarchy and network that works in ordinary times to maintain cohesion among followers, and in disaster to locate them.

Elder Perry on the Priesthood, Part 4: Restoration Makes Authority Clear
Elder Perry on the Priesthood, Part 4: Restoration Makes Authority Clear
During his ministry on earth, Jesus Christ gave priesthood authority to the leaders of His Church. Unfortunately, over time apostasy occurred, and the earth was without the blessings of the priesthood until they were once again given to man during the Restoration.
But because of that Restoration, Elder L. Tom Perry of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles says in this fourth and final interview segment on the oath and covenant of the priesthood, it is readily apparent that “No man leads this Church. It is the Savior’s Church, and He leads through priesthood authority by delegating to one person [the President of the Church] that power and authority, and he [the President] delegates to others the operation of the Church here on earth.”
• How did the apostles recieve the authority at the time of Christ?
• How was that authority eventually lost?
• What led to the priesthood being restored?
• How is priesthood authority bestowed today?
• What is meant by the term keys?
• How can we know the presiding authority is using the proper authority?
