I AM Christ

The Nativity

The Christmas season is a time to celebrate the priceless gift of our our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His birth, which we commemorate this season, is more than the symbol of a holiday. He is the Son of God, the Redeemer of all mankind, the King of Kings, and the Prince of Peace. He is our joy and our salvation, and we will find Christmas of greater meaning as we strive to emulate His life and teachings.

The Great Race - The Spoken Word

No one who was there for field day at Worthington, Ohio's, Colonial Hills Elementary School will ever forget the great race. It wasn't about who placed first or second; it was about grit, determination, support, and sensitivity. Among the eager fifth- and sixth-graders who lined up for the 400-meter event was Matt, who suffers from spastic cerebral palsy, a debilitating condition that limits his mobility and physical exertion. But Matt had determined he would run that race.

By the time he was halfway around the course, his classmates were passing him on their second and final lap. His physical education teacher joined Matt on the field to encourage him as he struggled on. He had bursts of energy and moments of near collapse. But Matt kept going with the determination of a champion. His mother cried with joy at his courage and resolve as his classmates began to cheer, "Let's go, Matt! Let's go!"1

He did. And as he crossed the finish line, every hand flew to the air signaling victory. Matt's finish would stand in memory as the greatest race that day.

We can learn a lot from Matt and those who gathered around him. We can learn about facing our challenges and pushing on, living our dreams and having the courage to try and keep trying. We can learn about kindness and support from those who run with us, no matter the pace of life.

We are better people when we are there for others—lifting them, helping them, and sharing with them the sweetness of their dreams and their personal victories. And while it's true that those for whom you cheer will be blessed by your support, it's equally true that your caring relationship with them will be a blessing to you as well.

It is never too late!

I do not know who in this vast audience today may need to hear the message of forgiveness inherent in this parable [see Matthew 20:1–15], but however late you think you are, however many chances you think you have missed, however many mistakes you feel you have made or talents you think you don’t have, or distance from home and family and God you feel you have traveled, I testify that you have nottraveled beyond the reach of divine love. It is not possible for you to sink lower than the infinite light of Christ’s Atonement shines.

Faith of our Fathers - Legacy

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf shares his gratitude for early Church pioneers and for modern-day pioneers.
More than a century has passed since tens of thousands of pioneers sailed across oceans to heed a prophet’s call to gather to Zion. They left family and friends; they pulled handcarts across the plains; they grew a city out of a desert. Most important, the pioneers left a legacy of perseverance, faith, and sacrifice.

Faith of our Fathers - Mission

Modern-day missionaries—like early pioneers—sacrifice to further the work of the Lord.
“As I have thought about our early ancestors, their main objective and their goal was to be obedient to our Heavenly Father, and it was for the gospel of Jesus Christ,” Sister Taylor said. “The things we do and the missions that we serve are for that same goal and that same purpose.”
The Taylors left 11 children, 53 grandchildren, and 68 great-grandchildren behind when they accepted the call to serve. They missed weddings, missionary farewells, and baby blessings. They faced financial sacrifices. But they testified of the blessings they received as they were obedient to their calling.

Faith of our Fathers - Conversion

Overcoming opposition with the Lord's help leads to sweet experiences.
Growing up in Ireland, Susan Johnsen had attended a Christian church from the time she was young, but felt like she didn’t understand who God really was. One night when she was 18, she prayed for help to know more about God. The next day, the missionaries knocked on her door and began teaching her.
She soon gained a testimony of the gospel and wanted to be baptized. Her parents, however, did not agree with her decision. Despite the opposition she faced from friends and family, she was baptized.

Acting on Inspiration

As we act on inspiration from God, our hearts change, and we can help change the hearts of others.
Juan Mendoza of Mexico felt like something was missing in his life. Nothing seemed to fill the emptiness he felt inside—until he chose to begin following the spiritual promptings he felt to return to Church, read his scriptures, and pray.
Acting upon these feelings, he felt a sensation of comfort, relief, and forgiveness. “The Lord never forgets us,” he says. Having recognized the blessings that came from acting upon inspiration, he knew what to do when he began feeling the need to serve a mission.
“I cannot express … how much I desire to always serve the Lord,” he says.

Following Divine Guidance

One of the great lessons that each of us needs to learn is to ask. Why does the Lord want us to pray to Him and to ask? Because that is how revelation is received.
When I am faced with a very difficult matter, this is how I try to understand what to do. I fast. I pray to find and understand scriptures that will be helpful. That process is cyclical. I start reading a passage of scripture; I ponder what the verse means. I pray for inspiration. I then ponder and pray to know if I have captured all the Lord wants me to do. Often more impressions come with increased understanding of doctrine. I have found that pattern to be a good way to learn from the scriptures. . . .
The more closely you follow divine guidance, the greater will be your happiness here and for eternity—

Enemy Territory

“You young people are being raised in enemy territory, but I promise you will be protected and shielded from the attacks of the adversary if you will heed the promptings that come from the Holy Ghost,” says President Boyd K. Packer. He shares an experience in which he was protected during World War II by listening to a prompting from the Spirit.

The Race of Life - Thomas S. Monson - April 2012 General Conference

This Way to Safety

No one has described the teenage years as being easy. They are often years of insecurity, of feeling as though you just don’t measure up, of trying to find your place with your peers, of trying to fit in. This is a time when you are becoming more independent—and perhaps desire more freedom than your parents are willing to give you right now. They are also prime years when Satan will tempt you and will do his utmost to entice you from the path which will lead you back to that heavenly home from which you came and back to your loved ones there and back to your Heavenly Father.

A Wartime Miracle

During World War II, in the early part of 1944, an experience involving the priesthood took place as United States marines were taking Kwajalein Atoll, part of the Marshall Islands and located in the Pacific Ocean about midway between Australia and Hawaii. What took place in this regard was related by a correspondent—not a member of the Church—who worked for a newspaper in Hawaii. In the 1944 newspaper article he wrote following the experience, he explained that he and other correspondents were in the second wave behind the marines at Kwajalein Atoll. As they advanced, they noticed a young marine floating facedown in the water, obviously badly wounded. The shallow water around him was red with his blood. And then they noticed another marine moving toward his wounded comrade. The second marine was also wounded, with his left arm hanging helplessly by his side. He lifted up the head of the one who was floating in the water in order to keep him from drowning. In a panicky voice he called for help. The correspondents looked again at the boy he was supporting and called back, “Son, there is nothing anyone can do for this boy.”

Will We Be Willing?

The call of duty came to Adam, to Noah, to Abraham, to Moses, to Samuel, to David. It came to the Prophet Joseph Smith and to each of his successors. The call of duty came to the boy Nephi when he was instructed by the Lord, through his father Lehi, to return to Jerusalem with his brothers to obtain the brass plates from Laban. Nephi’s brothers murmured, saying it was a hard thing which had been asked of them. What was Nephi’s response? Said he, “I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them” (1 Nephi 3:7).
