President Gordon B. Hinckley on Blacks & the LDS Priesthood

In 1978, an official declaration of the First Presidency reported that a revelation had been received by Mormon Church President Spencer W. Kimball directing that all worthy men be allowed to receive the priesthood. Until 1978, men of African descent had not been permitted to receive the LDS priesthood, although they could become members and serve within the church.

Elder David B. Haight was present when President Kimball received the revelation. Years later he bore this testimony in general conference:

I noticed an edition of the Chicago Tribune on the newsstand. The headline in the paper said, "Mormons Give Blacks Priesthood." And the subheading said, "President Kimball Claims to Have Received a Revelation." I bought a copy of the newspaper. I stared at one word in that subheading—claims. It stood out to me just like it was in red neon. As I walked along the hallway to make my plane connection, I thought, Here I am now in Chicago walking through this busy airport, yet I was a witness to this revelation. I was there. I witnessed it. I felt that heavenly influence. I was part of it. Little did the editor of that newspaper realize the truth of that revelation when he wrote, "... Claims to Have Received a Revelation." Little did he know, or the printer, or the man who put the ink on the press, or the one who delivered the newspaper—little did any of them know that it was truly a revelation from God. Little did they know what I knew because I was a witness to it (David B. Haight, "This Work Is True," Ensign, May 1996, 22).

Thousands of Youth Wear Sunday Best to Honor Mormon Leader

Preparing for school took a different turn for thousands of teenage Mormon students who, some 12 hours earlier, had learned of the death of their Church president, Gordon B. Hinckley.

The students responded to a flood of text messages from teens in at least six states, suggesting they arrive at school in their "Sunday best," rather than their accustomed jeans or other casual clothes, as a symbol of respect and honor to their deceased leader.

A few of these students shared their thoughts about President Gordon B. Hinckley.

Mormon Prophet Joseph Smith - Praise to the Man

The last of the mourners passed through the Mansion House at 5:00 p.m. on June 29, 1844. The coffins of Joseph and Hyrum were nailed closed and taken by hearse to the graveyard, though to elude malicious tampering, the bodies of the two Church leaders had been taken secretly to another location.

William W. Phelps, close associate of the Prophet Joseph, gave a stirring funeral sermon for the martyred Church leaders. "They can rest from their labors, and their works shall follow them," he declared. "Mourn not; these sons of God are safe; dry up your tears; confess the hand of the Lord in all things, and comfort each other with the sweet hope that their lives were precious in the sight of all heaven."

Phelps paid final tribute to the prophet of the Restoration, writing the hymn "Praise to the Man": "Hail to the Prophet, ascended to heaven! Traitors and tyrants now fight him in vain. Mingling with Gods, he can plan for his brethren; Death cannot conquer the hero again."

Spiritual Crocodiles

A seminary video excerpt with a message to be wary of pitfalls that exist in everyday life given by Boyd Packer to a youth group back in the 1980's. We can never know the total influence people have on us both socially and spiritually. I come from a community full of those who would rather listen to their ipod then those that give the warning signs - another tragedy is that those who who would be the the sign holders don't know the path either - and we find in many cases the blind leading the blind. seek every good thing from the author of good. and listen with your heart to feel the way before you.
